They CAN bite. They CAN be aggressive.
Are all hamsters this way? Absolutely not.
It all depends on how they're handled, and how often they're handled.
A well socialized hamster makes a wonderful pet. A mistreated or poorly socialized hamster can become fearful, aggressive, etc.
Syrian hamsters (the larger ones, such as a Golden) are often nicer than their Dwarf relatives. I heard that hamsters bite and are mean is that true?
I have had 12 hamsters and 4 rat. [not all at the same time!] And they were all wonderful little companions. Although i raised them with a lot of care. I held them frequently and stimulated them by adding different things to their cage. If you raise them right they will be perfect. Try and get the youngest one possible [not too young!] because then you can make it nice before a mean behavior [after being picked up over and over again at pet stores] settles in and becomes the norm.
Good luck!
It depends on what kind of hamster you have. I have a teddy bear hamster and they are the sweetest little things and they don't bite. I also have gerbils but since this is a hamster question, I doubt you care xD. It also depends on if they're tired or if they were sleeping or if your hands smell like food. If you're being rough with them, they will bite you. If you're providing a cozy warm house for them they will probably be more comfortable and they will start to like you.
Well of course they can bite, all animals can bite, it just depends on how you take care of them. If you are never home and never clean their cage, never hold them, never give them new food. Yes, they're going to be agressive. But if you give them love, hold them, and care for them they won't be as agressive.
If you do get a mean hamster. Try using this trick to get him to stop biting.
Get some rubber gloves and pick up your hamster. Your hamster will probably try to bite you. So when you have your hamster in your hands give him a treat, pet him and calmly talk to him while he's eating. He'll start being more relaxed. And will not be so nervous when you pick him up. If you do this for a week or two he should stop his biting. Your hamster will see being held as a reward, other than seeing it as a death sentence.
hamsters can bite !
