I have a 11 yr old chow lab mix that I have had since she was a pup and she has never been mean! She is the sweetest thing but I do agree with other people that it is all in how they are raised (just like pits!). Dont be scared of your dog. If you dont give it a reason to hurt you it probably wont. People assume things and look for the worst in animals because they dont understand them. Just love the dog and it will love you back!Is it true that chow chow mix dogs get really mean?
I am glad you decided to get him! Good luck, I am sure he is very lucky to have you as a new owner! Take care and Congrats!

I have a chow/lab mix and she's a great dog. She is more emotional than other dogs I've had that comes from the Chow side. She's not mean, but will pout if she doesn't get her walk, or you scold her. I guess it depends what the other part of the mix breed is. Her lab side makes her mellow and friendly.
no it's not true if you saw one and it's okay you should go for it.
ANY dog can turn on its owner if not properly trained. i have a chow chow right now and we had found her in the woods when she was 1 1/2 and she was tied to a pole and had no food or water. and she was very skinny. and now she is 8 in july. she has never bite anyone in our family. and she knows what people are good and bad. weve also owned 3 other chows. and they never bite anyone either. and my chow has saved us and one of our pit bulls from a bear. she loves to chase bears. they are GREAT dogs. mix or pure there great dogs.
Well, chow chows themselves have aggressive tendencies. They don't necessarily turn on their owners, because they're one-person dogs. Your fiance might be thinking of a neurological condition called ';rage,'; which some breeds are prone to (but not chows) and causes them to turn on their owners. However, they definitely can be aggressive. Mixing them with another breed definitely does mellow them out, however. Your best bet is to spend some time with the dog and get a feel for his or her personality. It's not that chows are mean dogs; they're just one-person dogs, meaning that they latch onto one person and aren't particularly warm with other people. Like I said, though, being a mixed dog will soften the trait considerably. Spend some time with the puppy, and definitely ask the shelter workers and even your vet.
Hello let me start off by saying that any animal can be made to be mean..They are not born to be mean.My family had a chow chow pup from the shelter for around 12 years before he passed.He was the best boy ever.If you teach your baby to be good and spend time with it train it and give it all the love and kindness it needs and deserves you and your new addition will be wonderful 2gether!All dogs can turn on people if they are mistreated,ill or left unloved and unattended.It is not just one breed that will turn.Most dogs have to have a reason to turn on someone or even something(like to feel threatened or abused).So if there is a chow chow that really has your attention and don't appear to have any aggressive behavior then go ahead and get your forever friend it will be a wonderful experience.....
Look, dog breeds themselves are not mean. It depends on how you train them, and how you TREAT the dog.
Yes, chows become aggressive, territorial, and protective of its its owners (especially women and children) But they are not what you'd call a ';mean'; dog.
Adopt it, see what happens..Make sure you socialize the dog, and treat her/him well. Do not strike it, and make sure that it is kept healthy and you should'nt have much trouble.
That's ridiculous. What, as a dog gets older they hit some magic turning point where they snap and decide ';I'm going to bite my owner today.';
Whatever.
I have a 9-year old chow mix who is one of the friendliest, most wonderful dogs you'll ever meet. He pulls a wagon with my 1-year old daughter riding in it. (See his picture at http://www.happy-dogs.net/Banditpics/Ban鈥?/a> )
Just be a good, loving, respectful owner, use positive training methods, you'll have a great family pet FOR LIFE.
Chows and chow mixes tend to attach themselves to one person or family and be very protective. I have never heard of a chow turning on the person or people who raised it from 8 weeks and did a good job of training and socializing it at 3 and 4 months of age when dogs form their personalities and lifelong habits.Problems from chows happen to owners who don't believe 3 and 4 months of age is the right time to train and socialize. Even a lot of so called trainers say wait until it's over 4 months. THEY HAVE NEVER READ A DOG PSYCHOLOGY BOOK or compared a dog trained at 3 and 4 months to one trained later. Nobody ever seems to know where stories like your fiance tells came from. If you want to know what an expert says, read ';Dog Psychology, the basis of dog training'; by Leon F Whitney.
i believe its all on how they r raised. ive had two dogs turn on me, one was a lab who was an older dog and the other a chow who wasn't very old.
