What does it mean to be true to yourself?

I don't understand...people keep saying be true to yourself and be honest with yourself. they keep saying dont be fake, what does it suppose to mean?What does it mean to be true to yourself?
Being true to yourself means never deny, by doing or saying, what you believe in....for example, if you believe stealing is a wrong thing to do then, don't steal anything or say stealing is OK. To do otherwise, would be not being true to what you believe in and it would make you a hypocrite....which is a liar to your own self................What does it mean to be true to yourself?
I guess it means don't try to be somebody you're not [naturally].





Eg if you're shy then don't pretend to be a party animal.





Except it also has the sense of ';don't try to fool yourself';





Eg if you're hopeless at math, don't reckon on becoming an accountant.





It's hard to say without knowing if they have something specific in mind. It may be nothing specific - just general good advice.
