What does it mean to be a true friend, if you just met the person?

Many people call the person they just met their friend, but are they really your friend, why not call the person ur associate, or home boy/girl. What would be the appropriate thing to call someone to be sure you can call them your friend? What does it mean to be a true friend, if you just met the person?
it is the person that is there all the time when you need them when you are in need of help ,bored , and when you have someone die in your life family or friend and just be there for some of these things and is the person that will stand tall at your needs in your life's problems! What does it mean to be a true friend, if you just met the person?

Someone you just met is an acquaintance. They may become a friend in time (and vice versa) after the 2 people have gotten to know one another...established trust, commonalities, etc.

The word 'friend' is commonly misused. Some people use it to refer to nearly everyone they know, whether that person is actually a 'friend' to them or not. An associate would most often be looked at as someone you work with...and home boy or home girl are both slang for 'friend' in most instances.
i think that a freind is somone you can be yourself around them and not get judged, someone who likes your company and you like theres, and someone who you can talk to. if any of those three apply to you, then they are probably someone that you can call your freind. Hope this helps
If you just met the person, then it would not be appropriate to call them your friend because you don't know them well enough yet. If anything they could be called an acquaintance.
I kinda agree, i would call them a mate, as for me, it seems a little less casual than friend but more than an associate.
