when my nephew was born this weekend his dr. said he had a true knot in the umbilical cord. just wondered what this meant and if it was of any danger to him. What does it mean to have a true knot in an umbilical cord?
Absolutly a potential danger! It could have cut off his oxygen. Very lucky that he was born fine! I had a friend who had a baby with a true knot back in December. What does it mean to have a true knot in an umbilical cord?
If it is found after birth its ok. But a true knot is what it sound like... a knot... and it can cut off blood supply. its ooe of the leading causes of stillborn babies. Your lucky your nephew was born alive!
It is exactly what it sounds like. My little brother had a knot in his umbilical cord when he was born and it prevented him for getting enough nutrients so he was only 4lbs at birth but he is fine now. If your nephew was born healthy and a nice size then all should be well.
This means there was an actual knot in the umbilical cord. It happens when the cord is very long and the baby moves around. If he made it through the delivery chances are there was no damage. Sometime a true knot can cut off the blood supply and the baby dies sometime only days before it would be born. Your nephew was very fortunate.
A knot in an umbilical cord usually happens when baby keeps on moving inside. This is alarming because it will impede circulation and this will always reflect a decreased HR in the monitor.
My son had one. I had pre-eclampsia, PIH, his heart rates would decel. It was scary. It's a knot that pre-existed in the umbilical cord. It's very rare.
