What does the quote from Williams Shakespeare ';This above all: To thine own self be true.'; mean?

I'm doing an english report and i need to know what it means

pleas if you can help then help! What does the quote from Williams Shakespeare ';This above all: To thine own self be true.'; mean?
Although you may understand this to mean ';Be true to thyself'; In the context of Hamlet, Polonius spoke these words to his son, Laertes before he went away.

This is Polonius' way of saying ';to your name be faithful'; In other words, he didn't want his son to make a mockery of his Good Name.

This is why Shakespeare is so interesting to read and analyze. What does the quote from Williams Shakespeare ';This above all: To thine own self be true.'; mean?
It means to have insight. To bite the bullet and evaluate yourself warts and all. Each and every one of us have done things that nobody else knows about but are still to our discredit. Bear in mind your weaknesses in order that you are not too harsh on others that are weak. Bear in mind the effort you have made to be where you are, and feel free to criticize those whose circumstances are due to lack of effort on their part. In other words, ask yourself if you are qualified to sit in judgement.
for whatever you do, be true to yourself. Don't sell yourself short nor take yourself for granted. respect yourself.
IT MEANS STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF NO MATTER WHAT ANYBODY SAYS OR WHAT ANYBODY DOES!
Don't be a poser. Keep it real. If you tell lies to yourself, you'll tell lies to others.
